TRADE CYCLES
Understanding Trade Cycles in Tactical Trading
Tactical Trading is designed to manage positions through a structured sequence of actions often referred to as a trade cycle. Rather than viewing each buy or sell decision as an isolated event, the methodology treats a position as something that evolves over time in response to normal price movement.
A trade cycle typically begins when a position is initiated based on a trader’s stock selection process. From that point forward, the focus shifts to managing the position according to predefined guidelines that take into account price movement, position size, and overall capital exposure. As prices fluctuate within their typical range, adjustments may be made in a measured and planned manner rather than through reactive decision-making.
This structured progression helps traders think of a position as a process rather than a single prediction about market direction. During a cycle, exposure may increase or decrease as prices move through expected ranges. The objective is to respond to market movement in a disciplined way while maintaining awareness of risk and capital usage.
Trade cycles can vary in duration depending on market conditions, volatility levels, and the behavior of the individual security. Some cycles may unfold relatively quickly during active market periods, while others may develop more gradually when price movement is subdued. The methodology is intended to provide a consistent framework regardless of how long a particular cycle takes to complete.
Importantly, Tactical Trading does not assume that every cycle will result in a favorable outcome. Market conditions can change, volatility can expand, and individual securities can behave unpredictably. For this reason, the structured nature of the cycle is designed to help traders manage uncertainty through predefined actions rather than relying solely on instinct or short-term market opinions.
By viewing trading activity as a series of structured cycles rather than disconnected trades, Tactical Trading encourages a more organized and methodical approach to position management. Over time, this perspective can help traders develop greater clarity around how exposure is built, reduced, and ultimately resolved within the normal rhythm of market price movement.
